2012 looks to be an insanely good year for all video game players around the world whether you play on a Playstation 3, an Xbox 360 or even a Wii. There are a number of great games that have recently been released and even better ones waiting to hit the market. Graphics and design are getting better along with a ton of other factors with the competition of the top games going through the roof for developers. The list below provides a top 10 list for PS3 for 2012. Some of the names you may recognize but there are some surprises and remakes hitting the market in 2012 such as the new Twisted Metal and Street Fighter x Tekken.

Mass Effect 3 – Mass Effect 3 is the third and final installment in the Mass Effect Trilogy series and is an action packed role playing video game. It is set to be released on March 6, 2012 and the expectations are incredibly high for it. The main change in Mass Effect 3 is that the combat system has been vastly improved. With less limitations for movement around the battlefield and more weapons to choose from as well as a new 4 player multiplayer co-op mode, it will definitely be a user favorite. Mass Effect 3 also puts a huge emphasis on 3rd person shooter play. The developers believe that this will make the game more “commercially viable”.

Street Fighter x Tekken – Capcom has finally come to their senses and is ready to release another Street Fighter on March 6, 2012 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC users. It will look virtually the same as older Street Fighter games with a 2D style gameplay where players battle it out against a computer character in a tournament style format. All the same characters will make an appearance in this installment as well as some new and improved ones. Players can also look forward to some of the same moves like the Hadouken but more moves are also available for all characters.

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception - Uncharted 3 is the third installment in the Uncharted Series and is still exclusively for PS3 users. This action adventure game is played in the third person perspective and has a ton of new and improved features. It has some features very similar to Assassins Creed such as the ability to climb, sprint, and even scale ledges but also has features similar to third person shooter games. There is also a completely new melee system integrated into the game making it attacking enemies not so boring and plain. One example is the ability to attack an enemy while you are being choked.

Little Big Planet 2 - Little Big Planet 2 is a puzzle platformer video game which is vastly centered around user-generated content very similar to Minecraft. The game retained its 2.5D, three layer look from the original Little Big Planet but players are not restricted to just playing the platforming levels. They can now produce levels of different types such as racing levels and even role playing games. Little Big Planet 2, like is predecessors is exclusively for Playstion 3 only.

Resistance 3 - Resistance 3 is a science fiction, post-apocalyptic, first person shooter video game and is exclusively for PlayStation 3. It is very similar to its two predecessors but there are quite a few changes as well. There is a mixture of new and old weapons within Resistance 3. One new one is the Mutator which shoots a poison mist at enemies eventually causing them to explode. All weapons, old and new, are upgradeable and become more powerful with more use. Resistance 3 also features a 16 player online multiplayer component with 5 different game modes including Team Deathmatch and Chain Reaction.

Twisted Metal - Twisted Metal is a vehicle combat video game and is due to be released February 14, 2012. It has a strong focus on mutiplayer combat including online modes with up to 16 players and even 4 player split screen availability. This is the 8th Twisted Metal installment but its developers have hinted that it will have nothing to do with the previous seven games giving it its own unique look and feel. It is said that it will only be available for PlayStation 3 but rumors say that it will also be available for Xbox 360.

Dead Space 2 - Dead Space 2 is a survival, horror, third-person shooter video game but unlike the original Dead Space, it has a multiplayer mode where two teams of four face off against one another similar to Left 4 Dead’s multiplayer mode. In campaign mode, players take the role of Isaac Clarke whom has just awaken from a coma and is the only survivor of an alien infestation. He suffers from Dementia and is haunted by the visions of his dead girlfriend so survival is even harder than ever before. Dead Space 2 received universal critical acclaim from critics and also received amazingly high ratings.

Rage - Rage is a first person shooter video game where players take the role of a character in a post-apocalyptic world. The game features quite a few role playing game elements such as an inventory system and a looting system but focuses more on shooting and driving segments. Players use their vehicle to get from one mission to the next or to just explore the world within Rage. This is a fully upgradable vehicle and has weapon and defense capabilities. Rage also features a multiplayer component with two different modes called Road Rage and Legends of Wasteland.

Batman: Arkham City – If a game where stealth and predator tactics is what you are all about then Batman: Arkham City is one that you got to check out. This is an action adventure video game that features a main story line but also has a variety of other missions available that are not part of the main plot. These “side missions” are a nice refresher especially when you have already finished the main story line. Batman: Arkham City had amazing ratings and was one of the highest anticipated games of 2011. Players take the role of Batman but also have the opportunity to play as Catwoman and even have run ins with old school characters such as the Riddler.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 - The release of Final Fantasy XIII 2 is set to be on January 31, 2012. It features a unique and evolved battle system but keeps the rest of the components of the game virtually the same which is good because everyone loves Final Fantasy and if it is not broken, why fix it? Another big change in the game is that fact that monsters no longer roam the land freely, they simply appear when the player gets close enough to them. I do not know how Final Fantasy users will react to this but it should not make that big of an impact on the game itself. Players will also be able to revisit old areas from previous times almost like players can in Assassin’s Creed. This is a great feature to have and should receive very positive feedback.
