Eve Online is a massively multiplayer online role playing game set in a player driven science fiction world within the depths of space. There are thousands of star systems that make up this massive world of space which are connected though star gates. These star systems consist of things such as blackholes, moons, planets and space systems.
There are a ton of online activities that players can participate in while playing Eve Online; the most popular of which are piracy, exploration, trading and even player vs player battles or player vs environment battles. Players can level up their ship just like they would level up a character in a land based MMORPG.
Eve Online has been around since 2003 and became very popular upon its release. It received very good reviews from all online communities and even has won Game of the Year a couple times from very reliable websites. This has truly become one of the best games that can be played online but there is one great downfall. It cost anywhere between $10 – $15 a month to play and that can get pretty pricey. For that reason we have compiled a list of free to play online games that are all space related and share some of the same characteristics that Eve Online does. Check them out and let us know what you think.

I appreciate the effort of making this list, but it is lacking. I’ve played EVE, STO and BGO, and EVE has many features that both of those are lacking. For one, EVE has an entirely player driven economy. That is on of the major aspects of the game. Everything you buy and use has been made by a player, transported by another player, then sold to you or to a middleman. This allows for market manipulation and actually running the exchange as a profession. STO get’s near this with it’s exchange, but there is no transport feature and you can only buy at a few poin ts in the galaxy. The STO galaxy is tiny, compared to the EVE one which I have never crossed and would take hours to try to cross.
Also, you can never get the same thrill as in EVE, anyone can decided to jsut open fire and kill you, it means that every moment is a tense and exciting (and enjoyable) experiance. In STO, you have to actually go to a system for PvE or be challenged for PvP. EVE also has many more ships with 4 distinct factions.
BGO has far too few weapon types, short range, general purpose and long range, which come in 4 sizes each, all with the same animation.
STO has a major problem, maps are far too small and max range is 10km. Modern weapon can reach 10km, and this is in atmosphere with air resistance, star trek weapons can far outrange that. As seen in the original series where the Enterprise destroyed an Orion ship with it’s phaser banks at 75000+km. Granted the original series could make this sort of stuff up as they didn’t have the graphics to actually portray the space combat.
STO has no mining or piracy, both are very fun and essential professions for a complete MMORPG world.
I admit that if there was a F2P MMORPG with all these traits EVE would go out of business, so there can’t be one. I just wish EVE was a bit less expensive.
yeah you’re right mate. Closest thing to EVE would be Black Prophecy but that’s kinda going out in a few weeks. I just wish they’d just make a game with relatively low subscription cost, i hate wasting too much money on games :/. OVER AND OUT!
